The residence permit, regulated by Law no. 23/2007, is a document issued in the form of a residence permit, which allows foreign citizens to reside in Portugal, and differs as follows: Temporary residence permit and Permanent residence permit.
Temporary Residence Permit
The temporary residence permit is a residence permit that allows foreign citizens to reside in Portugal for a certain period and has the following characteristics:
As a rule, it is valid for two years from the date of issue of the respective permit;
It is renewable for successive periods of three years;
The residence permit must be renewed whenever there is a change in the identification details registered on it.
Permanent Residence Permit
The permanent residence permit is a residence permit that allows foreign citizens to reside in Portugal indefinitely and has the following characteristics:
It has no expiry date;
The residence permit must, however, be renewed every five years or whenever there is a change in the identification details registered on it.
