13 Aug What happens and what are the options available after the mandatory five-year investment in Portugal’s Golden Visa?
One of the most attractive features of the Golden Visa program is its long-term horizon: after five years, you’re no longer required to maintain the original investment.
But what exactly happens then?
Here are your main options:
- Apply for permanent residency: After five years, you can transition from a temporary Golden Visa to permanent resident status. This requires basic Portuguese language skills (A2 level) and proof of sufficient ties to the country.
- Apply for Portuguese citizenship: This is the goal for many investors. With five years of legal residency, a clean criminal record, and successful completion of the language test, you can apply for citizenship — and an EU passport.
- Withdraw the investment: Once the five-year mark is crossed and either permanent residency or citizenship is secured, you’re free to divest your funds or exit the investment.
- Maintain Golden Visa status: If you prefer, you can continue renewing your Golden Visa every two years, provided the investment is maintained and all other requirements are met.
For many, the five-year checkpoint is the moment they transition from being an investor with privileges to a fully integrated resident — or citizen — of Portugal.
