Golden Visa & Pets: What You Need to Know to Bring and Legalize Your Pet in Portugal

With the growing interest in Portugal’s Golden Visa program, many foreign investors are choosing to relocate with their pets. Portugal is known for its high quality of life, safety, and welcoming environment—but to bring pets legally, it’s important to understand the applicable EU and Portuguese regulations.

Before traveling, pets must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. The rabies vaccine should be administered at least 21 days prior to entry. Owners must also obtain an international veterinary certificate, confirming the animal’s good health and compliance with EU health standards.

For pets from non-EU countries, additional treatments such as deworming may be required, and proper documentation—including pet passports, vaccination records, and microchip proof—must be provided. Upon arrival, animals are subject to a veterinary inspection by Portuguese authorities. Non-compliance can lead to quarantine or denied entry.

Once in Portugal, pets must be registered with a local vet and in the national pet identification system. This ensures continued care and legal compliance.

As legal advisors, we support Golden Visa holders throughout this process—making sure all legal steps are met so your pet can join you in Portugal smoothly and safely.
