Positive Momentum for Portugal’s Golden Visa: AIMA Enters a New Phase of Efficiency

Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) has introduced key reforms to address the delays affecting Golden Visa (ARI) applicants, particularly those with expired residency cards awaiting renewal appointments. These changes are designed to streamline processes, reduce backlogs, and provide much-needed clarity for applicants.

In response to delays, the Portuguese government has extended the validity of residency cards and visas that expired after February 22, 2020, until June 30, 2025, allowing applicants to continue living and accessing services in Portugal. AIMA has also partnered with the Portuguese Bar Association to expedite application processing, as this collaboration aims to reduce waiting times and speed up decision-making.

A major ruling by the Portuguese Supreme Administrative Court enforced a 90 working-day processing deadline for residency applications, ensuring that AIMA adheres to clear timelines and maintains accountability. Additionally, the government has committed to resolving all pending Golden Visa applications by mid-2025, with expanded immigration centers and more staff to improve efficiency and reduce delays.

These reforms signal a positive shift for Golden Visa applicants, offering greater certainty, more predictable timelines, and a smoother process for those with expired residency cards. With extended validity, streamlined procedures, and clear commitments to clearing the backlog, AIMA is improving the Golden Visa experience and creating a more efficient path forward.
